today the ocean made me cry

I walked to the beach today for my daily surf and was debating getting in the water. The tide was super high, it was windy, there wasn't much going on, but then I spotted some dolphins and we hadn't hung out in awhile so I went in. I was waiting for my friends to come back when I spotted something large and orange in the distance, it was a plastic flower pot. Of course I couldn't leave it, so I paddled out to it, paddled all the way in, walked to a garbage, and paddled back out. Then a candy bar rapper floated by me followed by a ziplock bag. I was sticking the garbage into the legs of my wetsuit so I could continue surfing guilt free. I started paddling into a wave and caught a black plastic bag in my hand. OVER 100,000 MARINE ANIMALS, INCLUDING DOLPHINS, DIE EVERY YEAR FROM PLASTIC BAGS. Obviously, I wasn't in the ocean to surf today and 3 large dolphin friends popped up about 10 feet away to remind me they needed my help, our help. After about an hour and a half of paddling up and down the coast with the dolphins this is what I collected.....

The largest landfill is in the ocean. It's twice the size of Texas and floating in between California and Hawaii. And that's only the "Eastern Garbage Patch"....... there are others. Seeing what the dolphins see this morning made me cry. I'm chocking back tears right now. All that plastic we use daily without even thinking twice about it is what is showing up in the stomachs of dead dolphins in autopsies. I know this is harsh and I know it's tough to live in this world without using plastic, but the most beautiful things on this earth are dying as we continue unconsciously consuming. Just start somewhere. Join me today as I promise to NEVER ACCEPT OR USE A PLASTIC BAG AGAIN. The grocery store is an obvious one, but I quit doing that awhile ago. I'm talking about anywhere and everywhere.... cvs, the airport, filling prescriptions, gas stations, Disneyland, clothing stores, restaurant to go bags. Say it with me " I will never use a plastic bag again!" and while we're at it you can join my commitment to NEVER USE PLASTIC WATER BOTTLES. Americans will buy an estimated 25 billion single-serving, plastic water bottles this year. Don't be one of them. 22 billion of those will end up in a landfill. Just go get yourself a stainless steal water bottle and don't be lazy.
Tomorrow is Earth Day on the calender, but if you haven't got the memo EARTH DAY IS EVERYDAY. So please, I beg you, commit to something that will better the environment and you will better yourself.

now lets share our commitment with everyone we know!

This made me cry :(

We as a human race kind of suck sometimes, ya know? It's time to fix it!

it is sad when you realize how much of a plague we have become to this planet.

girl, I know exactly how you feel, every time I go to the beach I end up picking up other people's garbage that otherwise would have end up some beautiful sea creature's suffocating last meal. I don't ever use plastic bags, I gave up plastic bottles a long time ago (not just water but any juice I bought anywhere), now I'm giving up EVERYTHING plastic. Straws, to-go containers... maybe almost impossible but I sure will do my absolute best. NO MORE! We need a major reality check and thank you for posting this beautiful message. I love you! xox

Well said. The beauty and home of some of our planets most amazing friends must be preserved. Every small step taken by each person is a direct effect to our mother and her enormous, loving, mixed family

..the beach is my favorite place to be...especially at sunset....I was in jamaica one year right after a hurrican and was appalled at all the plastic that had washed up on the beach from the high tide. I had similar experience in Cancun, Mexico. It is not just local but a global problem.

After that Jamaica trip last year I switched to a Brita pitcher and stainless steel water bottle.

I live by the beach and it is so sad what we are doing to the environment and the creatures that live along side of us.

Hey Tawney--it's been quite a while and you may not remember me (I'm Noah Smith's sister) but I came accross this post from facebook and it really spoke to me. I have my own blog and I will be mentioning this post in it to try and motivate other people to do their part and stop using plastic grocery bags, buying bottled water, etc. Keep up the good work! I hope your next surfing session is a little more pleasant!
